Instructions

You will need:

  • Five 8 oz. Bottles
  • 36 oz. Distilled Water
  • oz. Aloe 10x
  • 2.6 oz.  Polawax Emulsifying Wax
  • 1.4 oz. BTMS-50 Conditioning Emulsifier
  • 3.7 oz. Squalane Oil
  • 1.3 oz. Avocado Oil
  • 1 oz. Agave Extract
  • 0.5 oz. Emerald Agave Fragrance Oil
  • 0.5 oz. Optiphen
  • Jade Liquid Crystal Dye*
  • Dropper

*Note: This project was originally made with Emerald Lab Color, which has been discontinued. Jade Liquid Crystal Dye will create a similar shade but may vary slightly from the photos.

EQUIPMENT PREP: Disinfect your utensils by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, your stick blender, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your mask. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible.

Follow these steps:

1

In a large heat-safe container, add 36 ounces of distilled water and 1 ounce of Aloe 10x. Heat in the microwave until the water is about 160° F.

2

In a separate heat-safe container, combine 3.7 ounces of squalane oil, 1.3 ounces of avocado oil, 1 ounce of agave extract, 2.6 ounces of Polawax Emulsifying Wax, and 1.4 ounces of BTMS-50. Heat the mixture in the microwave on 30-60 second bursts until the waxes are fully melted and the mixture is about 180° F.

3

Check the temperature of both containers. Each one should be about 160-180° F. When they’re ready, tap your stick blender on the bottom of the bowl to release bubbles. Pour the oils and wax into the water and begin pulsing the stick blender. Blend the mixture for 60-90 seconds, making sure the oil and water phases are fully emulsified. Scrape the bowl of the oil and wax mixture to make sure you got every bit out and into the water.

4

Continue stick blending until the temperature drops to about 130-140° F. Add 0.5 ounces of Emerald Agave Fragrance Oil and 0.5 ounces of Optiphen. Stick blend for another 60-90 seconds to fully combine.

5

Add 3-5 mL of diluted Jade Liquid Crystal Dye, depending on your preference. You can always add more color to make it more saturated, so start with a small amount and continue to add more if you prefer.

6

Use a funnel or steady hand to pour the lotion into the containers. If it is a little thick to pour, place it in the microwave and gently reheat using 10 second bursts - you don’t want it to become too hot and damage the preservative.

7

Allow the containers to sit with the cap off for several hours to prevent condensation. Screw on the tops and enjoy!
