Aloe Shampoo Bar Project
Shampoo bars are a great low-waste alternative to traditional formulas, which usually come in plastic bottles.
They feel amazing too! In this recipe, we used cocoa butter and aloe extract to moisturize the hair. It's also formulated with new Foaming Noodles - SCI and Bubble Boost - CAPB , which are surfactants derived from coconuts. They make everything nice and dark. Find more surfactants for DIY soap here.
The color comes from Sage Green Mica - just a little bit will do the trick! White Lily and Aloe Fragrance Oil is the perfect finishing touch, with notes of lily, violet, pineapple, and sandalwood. What You Need:
4 Cavity Succulent Silicone Mold
White Lily and Aloe Fragrance Oil - 2 oz
Bubble Boost - CAPB - 8 oz
Foaming Noodles - SCI - 1 lb
BTMS - 50 Conditioning Emulsifier - 2 oz
Deodorized Cocoa Butter Wafers - 1 lb
DL-Panthenol - 1 oz
Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
Water Soluble Aloe Extract - 1 oz
Geogard 221 - 1 oz
Droppers With Suction Bulb - 10 droppers
Sage Green Mica - 1 oz
Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
- White Lily and Aloe Fragrance Oil - 2 oz
- Bubble Boost - CAPB - 8 oz
- Foaming Noodles - SCI - 1 lb
- BTMS - 50 Conditioning Emulsifier - 2 oz
- Deodorized Cocoa Butter Wafers - 1 lb
- DL-Panthenol - 1 oz
- Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
- Water Soluble Aloe Extract - 1 oz
- Geogard 221 - 1 oz
- Sage Green Mica - 1 oz
EQUIPMENT:
- 4 Cavity Succulent Silicone Mold
- Droppers With Suction Bulb - 10 droppers
Instructions
You will need:
- 4 Cavity Succulent Silicone Mold
- 9 oz. Foaming Noodles - SCI
- 3 oz. Bubble Boost - CAPB
- 0.4 oz. Cocoa Butter
- 0.7 oz. BTMS-50
- 0.4 oz. Sodium Lactate
- 0.2 oz. Water Soluble Aloe Extract
- 0.1 oz. DL-Panthenol
- 0.2 oz. White Lily and Aloe Fragrance Oil
- Sage Green Mica*
- 2 mL Geogard 221
*Note: This recipe originally used Jade Liquid Crystal Dye, which has been discontinued. Sage Green Mica will yield a similar shade but may look different than the photos.
Follow these steps:

Set up a double boiler - fill a large pot with a small amount of water and bring to a soft boil. Cover the pot with a heat-safe bowl. To the bowl, add 9 ounces of Foaming Noodles and 3 ounces of Bubble Boost. Cover with a lid or foil.

In a small heat-safe container, add 0.4 ounces of cocoa butter and 0.7 ounces of BTMS-50. Slowly melt in the microwave using 30 second bursts. Add 0.2 ounces of White Lily and Aloe Fragrance Oil and stir.

In a separate small container, add 0.4 ounces of sodium lactate, 0.2 ounces of water soluble aloe extract, and 0.1 ounces of DL-Panthenol. Stir until the DL-Panthenol is mostly dissolved.

After about 15-20 minutes, check on the Foaming Noodles and Bubble Boost. Stir to help them heat evenly. The Foaming Noodles will not fully melt, but the ingredients will begin to form a thick gel-like paste. Allow them to heat for another 10-15 minutes.

Turn off the heat to the double boiler, but keep the bowl on the pot of hot water. Add the butter mixture and sodium lactate mixture to the surfactants and stir thoroughly. Add 1/8 tsp at a time until you have a soft green color - stir thoroughly until there are no clumps.

Remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to about 160° F. Mix in 2 mL of Geogard 221 and stir thoroughly.

Working quickly, spoon the shampoo mixture into the Succulent Silicone Mold. With gloved hands, press the mixture firmly into the mold cavities to ensure they fill all the succulent details.

Allow the shampoo bars to cool for 3-4 hours, up to overnight. Gently press out of the mold and allow to cure for 3-7 days.

To use, apply the shampoo bar directly to wet hair and lather. Or, lather the bar in your hand or loofah and apply the lather to wet hair. Rinse and continue your hair routine as usual. Enjoy!
