What You Need:
Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
- Glycerin - Liquid - 1 lb
- Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
- Emulsifying Wax - 1 lb
- Oat Oil - 1 oz
- Shea Butter - 1 lb
- Colloidal Oatmeal - 1 oz
- Germaben Preservative - 1 oz
- Oat Extract - 1 oz
- Calendula Extract - 1 oz
- Vitamin E Oil - 1 oz
- Vanilla and Tonka Natural Fragrance Oil - 2 oz
- Aloe Vera Concentrate - 1 oz
EQUIPMENT:
- 2 oz Frosted Glass Jar with White Cap - 10
Instructions
You will need:
5-6 Two oz. Frosted Jars
Heated Water Phase:
- 184.5 g. Distilled Water (65%)
- 15 g. Glycerin (5%)
- 9 g. Sodium Lactate (3%)
- 24 g. Aloe Vera Concentrate (8%)
Heated Oil Phase:
- 13.5 g. Emulsifying Wax (4.5%)
- 15 g. Oat Oil (5%)
- 18 g. Shea Butter (6%)
- 3 g. Colloidal Oatmeal (1%)
Preservative:
- 3 g. Germaben II (1%)
Cool Down:
- 6 g. Oat Extract (2%)
- 6 g. Calendula Extract (2%)
- 1.5 g. Vitamin E (0.5%)
- 1.5 g Natural Vanilla and Tonka Fragrance Oil (0.5%)
Follow these steps:
EQUIPMENT PREP: Disinfect your utensils by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your cleanser. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible.
Prepare a water bath by bringing about 3 cm/1" of water to a bare simmer over low to medium-low heat in a wide, shallow, flat-bottomed pan.
1
Weigh the heated water phase (184.5 grams of distilled water, 15 grams of glycerin, 9 grams of sodium lactate, 24 grams of aloe vera concentrate) into a small heat-resistant glass measuring cup or glass beaker. Weigh the entire lot (measuring cup + ingredients) and note that weight for use later.
2
Weigh the heated oil phase (13.5 grams of emulsifying wax, 15 grams of oat oil, 18 grams of shea butter, 3 grams of colloidal oatmeal) into a second heat-resistant glass measuring cup.
3
Place both measuring cups in your prepared water bath to melt everything through.
4
After about 20–30 minutes, the emulsifying wax and shea butter should be completely melted (remember that the colloidal oatmeal won’t melt!) and the water part should be hot and thoroughly dissolved. Remove the water bath from the heat and weigh the water phase. Add enough hot distilled water to the heated water phase to bring the weight back up to what it was before heating, and then pour the water part into the oil part. Stir to incorporate.
5
Grab your immersion blender and begin blending the mixture, starting with short bursts so the still-very-liquid mixture doesn't whirl up and spray everywhere. Blend for about a minute before switching to hand stirring. You'll need to be diligent with the stirring for the first 3-5 minutes, but once the emulsion has thickened up a bit and is uniform, you can switch to stirring occasionally. How long this will take will depend on your batch size, but expect at least 3-5 minutes of constant stirring and another 10-15 minutes of intermittent stirring as the emulsion cools and thickens. Once the outside of the glass measuring cup is just warm to the touch (40° C/104° F or cooler, if you have a thermometer) we're ready to proceed.
6
Weigh 3 grams of Germaben II into the emulsion and stir thoroughly to incorporate.
7
Weigh the cool down phase (6 grams of oat extract, 6 grams of calendula extract, 1.5 grams of vitamin E, and 1.5 grams of Natural Vanilla and Tonka Fragrance Oil) into the cream, stirring thoroughly until the mixture is uniform.
8
Once the cool down phase has been incorporated, pour or spoon the cream into jars.
9
To use as a cleanser, massage a small dollop of into dry or damp skin, work into a low lather with wet hands, and rinse. To use as a body cream; apply to dry skin as needed. Enjoy!
