This Agave Bloom Soap was inspired by prickly pear cacti.

The combination of Dark Green Mica and poppy seeds give the perfect cacti look. The top is accented with "flowers" made from piping soap with a frosting bag and tip. Agave Bloom Fragrance Oil gives the bars a fresh and green scent.

While this project looks complicated, it's easy than you think! Both the main batch of soap and the flowers piped on top require a thick trace, so you don't need to worry about your soap batter becoming too thick.

  • Lots of Lather Quick Mix - 54 oz
  • Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
  • Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • Agave Bloom Fragrance Oil - 1.75 oz
  • Dark Green Mica - 1 oz
  • Titanium Dioxide Pigment - 1 oz
  • Poppy Seeds - 3 oz
  • Desert Rose Mica - 1 oz
  • White Jojoba Beads- Medium - 1 oz
  • Agave Extract - 1 oz
EQUIPMENT:
  • 10 inch Silicone Loaf Mold

Instructions

You will nee

  • 10" Silicone Loaf Mold
  • 42 oz. Lots of Lather Quick Mix
  • 6 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • 2 tsp. Sodium Lactate
  • 12 oz. Distilled Water (10% water discount)
  • 1.75 oz. Agave Bloom Fragrance Oil
  • 1 oz. Agave Extract
  • Dark Green Mica
  • Desert Rose Mica
  • Ttitanium Dioxide
  • Poppy Seeds
  • White Jojoba Beads

COLOR PREP: Disperse 2 teaspoons of Dark Green Mica into 2 tablespoons of lightweight liquid oil (like sunflower oil or sweet almond). Disperse 1 teaspoon Desert Rose Mica into 1 tablespoon of lightweight liquid mDisperse 1 teaspoon of titanium dioxide into 1 tablespoon of liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to work out any clumps.

FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 1.75 ounces of Agave Bloom Fragrance Oil into a glass fragrance oil-safe container. Set aside.

FROSTING BAG PREP: Insert the frosting tip of your choice into a frosting bag.

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.

Follow these steps:

1

Slowly and carefully add 6 ounces of lye to 12 ounces of water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 2 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.

2

Fully melt the entire bag of Lots of Lather Quick Mic until it’s completely clear and there is no cloudiness. Shake the bag to mix up all the oils. Measure 42 ounces into a large heat-safe container. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 100-120° F (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a thin trace.

3

Split off 300 mL of soap to a small container. Add 1 teaspoon of titanium dioxide and all of the dispersed Desert Rose Mica. Whisk in throughly. Add about 1/4 of the fragrance oil (it's okay to eyeball it) and stick blend. Stir in about 1-2 tablespoons of jojoba beads. Set soap aside to continue to thicken.

4

To the remaining soap, add all of the dispersed Dark Green Mica and 1 teaspoon of dispersed titanium dioxide. Add the remaining fragrance oil and stick blend until everything is combined. Add 2-4 teaspoons of poppy seeds (depending on personal preference). Add 1 ounce of agave extract and stick blend until you have a medium trace. Pour the soap into the mold.

5

You may need to wait for both the green and pink soap to become a thicker texture that will keep its shape. Once the green soap is thick enough, use the back of a spoon to create a rounded top. Once you're happy with the look, check the consistency of the pink soap - it needs to be thick enough to pipe onto the soap and hold it's shape.

6

Spoon some of the pink soap into the frosting bag and twist to close. Squeeze large dollops on top of the soap, all the way down the length of the mold. Repeat the process, piping more soap on top to create larger and taller flowers, until you're happy with the look.
TIP: If you have extra pink soap, pipe flowers into wax or parchement paper. You can use these to place on top of future batches.

7

Sprinkle more jojoba beads on the top of the piped flowers. Spritz the soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol to prevent soda ash.

8

Allow the soap to stay in the mold for about 2 days. Unmold and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!
