This moisturizing recipe is from Bramble Berry CEO and Founder Anne-Marie's new book, Milk Soaps. With a generous serving of mango and shea butter to provide skin conditioning, this is a dual-texture and -color soap. You can use any milk you like in the recipe.

The striking design uses a divider to produce even lines. You can make your own divider with clear packing tape and cardboard or use soap-safe premade ones.

INGREDIENTS:
  • Coconut Oil - 1 lb
  • Sunflower Oil - 1 lb
  • Apricot Kernel Oil - 1 lb
  • Shea Butter - 1 lb
  • Castor Oil - 1 lb
  • Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • Sodium Lactate - 4 oz
  • Bergamot Black Tea Fragrance Oil - 3.5 oz
  • Black Oxide Pigment - 1 oz
  • Poppy Seeds - 3 oz

Instructions

You will need:

  • 10" Silicone Loaf Mold
  • Multi-Pour Tool for 10" Silicone Mold
  • 2 Easy Pour Containers
  • 8.2 oz. Coconut Oil (25%)
  • 8.2 oz. Palm Oil (25%)
  • 6.6 oz. Sunflower Oil (20%)
  • 3.3 oz. Apricot Kernel Oil (10%)
  • 3.3 oz. Mango Butter (10%)
  • 1.6 oz. Shea Butter (5%)
  • 1.6 oz. Castor Oil (5%)
  • 10.9 oz. Frozen Milk
  • 4.6 oz. Lye
  • 3 tsp. Sodium Lactate
  • 2.4 oz. Bergamot Black Tea Fragrance Oil
  • 1 tsp. Black Oxide Mixed with 1 Tbsp. Sunflower Oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Poppy Seeds

EQUIPMENT PREP:  Insert the two end dividers in the mold and then the center divider. Make sure they are pressed tight against the bottom of the mold.

Follow these steps:

Melt the palm oil in its original container, mix it thoroughly, and measure 8.2 ounces into a heat-proof bowl large enough to hold the entire recipe. Melt and measure 8.2 ounces of coconut oil and add it to the bowl. Add 1.6 ounces of shea butter and 3.3 ounces of mango butter to the hot oils and stir until melted. If needed, microwave the bowl in 10-second bursts to melt the butter completely. Add 3.3 ounces of apricot kernel oil, 1.6 ounces of castor oil, and 6.6 ounces of sunflower oil and set the bowl aside.

Measure 10.9 ounces of frozen milk and 4.6 ounces of lye into separate heat-proof containers. Slowly add the lye to the milk a tablespoon at a time, stirring continuously until all the lye has fully dissolved. This can take up to 30 minutes due to the cold temperature. Add 3 tsp. sodium lactate to the lye mixture and stir to combine.

When the oils have cooled to between 100 and 105° F and the lye mixture is between 75 and 85° F, gently pour the lye mixture through the strainer into the oils, stirring any residue gently with a spatula.

Insert the stick blender into the batter, tilting it so that any trapped air can escape. Do not turn on the stick blender until the blades are fully immersed. Alternate pulsing and stirring with the stick blender until a thin trace is achieved.

Stir in 2.4 ounces of fragrance oil

Pour 17 ounces of soap batter into an Easy Pour Container.

Pour 7.5 ounces of soap batter into another Easy Pour Container and add 1/2 teaspoon dispersed black oxide.

Stir 1 1/2 tsp. of poppy seeds into the remaining batter.

Pour the black batter into the white batter in a circular motion, holding the container up so the black batter sinks in. Stir the batter once. Do not overmix.

Pour the black-and-white-swirled soap into one half of the mold.

Pour the poppy-seed batter into the other half.

Carefully lift the dividers straight up and out of the mold. Leave the tops as they are - do not swirl the black-and-white batters.

Spray thoroughly with 99% rubbing alcohol several times over 90 minutes to prevent soda ash. Let sit at room temperature for 48 hours before unmolding. Unmold, slice into bars, and bevel the edges, if desired.

Let the bars cure in a well-ventilated area for 4 to 6 weeks before using, turning them every few days to ensure they cure evenly. Note: The bars will turn light tan as they cure.
