This Raspberry Truffle Soap looks and smells like a decadent treat.

This Raspberry Truffle Soap looks and smells like a decadent treat. It's scented with Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil, which smells just like the real thing. 

This project combines several different techniques, including a hanger swirl, piping soap frosting, and creating melt and pour embeds. It requires a good understanding of trace and it's meant for more advanced soap makers. 

The melt and pour embeds need to be prepped first. We recommend using LCP Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base. It doesn't sweat as much as regular soap bases so it's perfect for embedding in cold process soap.

  • 16.8 oz. Olive Oil (35%)
  • 2.9 oz. Cocoa Butter (6%)
  • 12 oz. Coconut Oil (25%)
  • 12 oz. Palm Oil (25%)
  • 6.6 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
  • 14.8 oz. Distilled Water
  • 3 tsp. Sodium Lactate
  • 2 oz. Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil

Follow these steps:

MAKE THE EMBEDS

Chop 3.5 ounces of LCP Clear Melt and Pour Soap into small, even chunks. Place them in a heat-safe container. Add a small chunk of Perfect Red Color Block and melt in the microwave using 5-10 second bursts. Add more Perfect Red Color Block to the soap if you'd like. Stir in throughly.

Pour the soap into each cavity of the Small 9 Ball Silicone Mold. We recommend filling them about 3/4 of the way. Note: This project was originally made with the 18 Cavity Raspberry Silicone Mold, which has been discontinued. The Small 9 Ball Mold will create a similar shape but will look different from the photos.

Allow the soap to fully cool and harden - this will take about an hour. Unmold and set aside. 

MAKE THE BASE

COLORANT PREP: Disperse 1 teaspoon of the titanium dioxide into 1 tablespoon of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil). Use a mini mixer to get rid of any clumps. In a separate container, mix 1 teaspoon of Brown Oxide into 1 tablespoon of lightweight liquid oil. Finally, disperse 1/2 teaspoon of Raspberry Mica into 1/2 tablespoon of liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to get rid of any clumps. Fill the Powder Sprayer with Gold Sparkle Mica. Optional: To ensure that the titanium dioxide blends smoothly into the soap batter, we recommend micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Please note this is an optional tip but it does help with the titanium dioxide clumping in the soap. To micronize the colorant, simply use a coffee grinder to break up any clumps of color and prevent streaks of white from showing in the final soap. We like to use a coffee grinder that has a removable stainless steel mixing area for easy cleaning.

FRAGRANCE OIL PREP: Measure 2 ounces of Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil into a small glass container and set aside.

FROSTING BAG AND HANGER SWIRL TOOL PREP: Cut off the tip of the disposable frosting bag and insert the frosting tip. Set aside. Bend the Hanger Swirl Tool to fit inside the 10" Silicone Loaf Mold. 

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.

Slowly and carefully add 6.6 ounces of lye to 14.8 ounces of distilled water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 3 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the bars harden more quickly.

Melt and combine 2.9 ounces of avocado oil, 1.4 ounces of castor oil, 2.9 ounces of cocoa butter, 12 ounces of coconut oil, 16.8 ounces of olive oil, and 12 ounces of palm oil (completely melt the entire container of palm oil before portioning) into a large mixing bowl. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 130° F or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a thin trace.

Split off 15 ounces of soap into a separate container and add all of the dispersed titanium dioxide and 1 teaspoon dispersed Raspberry Mica. Use a whisk to thoroughly stir in the colorants.

To the remaining soap batter, add 2 teaspoons dispersed Brown Oxide and all of the Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil.

Check the consistency of the soap. It should be a light/medium trace. If it's still thin, give each container a few short bursts with the stick blender to slightly thicken. The soap should be thin enough to pour and swirl, but not so thin that the colors blend together.

Pour about 1/3 of the brown soap into the mold. Then pour about 1/3 of the pink soap into the brown. Pour the pink soap in different areas and at different heights to create a more complex swirl.

Continue to fill the mold with more brown and pink soap until all the pink soap has been poured. Leave enough brown soap to pipe on top.

Insert the Hanger Swirl Tool into the soap and swirl in different directions and sizes several times. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Pull the tool up and out of the mold.

Check the texture of the brown soap. It needs to be thick enough to hold shape but smooth enough to pipe. Test the consistency by adding a small amount of the soap to the prepped bag and piping a dollop into the mold. If it holds its shape, you’re ready to pipe. If the soap falls flat and loses the details, allow it to sit in the container for a few more minutes. Once the soap is thick enough to pipe, transfer a portion of the soap into the frosting bag. Note: We found it took about 10-15 minutes for the brown soap to firm up enough to pipe. This time will vary depending on several factors including trace and temperature, so keep your eye on it.

Begin by piping three small dollops of soap down the length of the mold. Pipe a dollop of soap on top of the center dollop to create height and fill in any large gaps on the sides. There is no right or wrong way to pipe soap frosting – just have fun with it.

Once you’re done piping, place a raspberry embed into the center of each dollop. Spray the top with Gold Sparkle Mica using the Powder Duster.

Spritz the top of the soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol to help prevent soda ash. This soap needs to be kept cool, so don’t insulate it. It can be left at room temperature of about 70° F or cooler. If you live in a hot climate, you may want to place the soap in the fridge or freezer for about 4-5 hours. Then, remove from the fridge or freezer and allow it to stay in the mold for about 2 days. Unmold and cut into bars. Allow the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks and enjoy!
