Ray of Sunshine Soap Project
This Ray of Sunshine Soap was created by Tania of Soapish! It's perfect for summer, or whenever you need a little extra sunshine.
Tania of Soapish is an expert at creating beautiful layers in cold process soap, and this project showcases those skills. Because it involves two days and a good understanding of trace, we recommend it for advanced soap makers.
The first step is to create the sun embed in the Silicone Column Mold. The next day, multiple layers are created in the 10" Silicone Loaf Mold. The bars are scented with Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil, which adds notes of mandarin, peach, and rhubarb.
This recipe is palm free and features plenty of skin-loving oils. Hemp butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil add firmness to the bars, while plenty of olive oil and avocado oil keep it balanced. Be careful to lightly stick blend the soap at the beginning, so it does not become too thick at the end.

COLORANT PREP: Disperse 1 teaspoon of Racing Stripe Orange Mica into 1 tablespoon of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil). Use a mini mixer to get rid of clumps.
FRAGRANCE OIL PREP: In a glass container, measure 1.6 ounces of Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil. Set aside.
SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your space. Always make soap in a well-ventilated area.
Follow these steps:
MAKE THE EMBEDS

Slowly and carefully add 3.6 ounces of lye to 8 ounces of distilled water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. Optional: Add 1.5 teaspoons of sodium lactate to help the soap harden more quickly.

Measure and melt 6.5 ounces coconut oil, 2.5 ounces of castor oil, 1 ounce of hemp seed oil, 3 ounces of hemp butter, 3.5 ounces of cocoa butter, 7 ounces of olive oil, and 2.5 ounces of avocado oil in a large heat-safe container. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 80-90° F or (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils and stick blend until you reach a thin trace.

Add 1.6 ounces of Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil and all the dispersed Racing Stripe Orange Mica. Use your stick blender to stir in the fragrance and color. Pulse with stick blender until the soap reaches a medium trace.

Set the Silicone Column Mold against a wall where you plan to let it harden. You don't want to move it after you pour the soap, otherwise it can come apart. Carefully pour in the soap and let it harden for 1-2 days.

Unmold the soap. Cut it vertically to form a half moon shape. Set aside.
MAKE THE BASE
COLORANT PREP: Disperse 2 teaspoons of titanium dioxide into 2 tablespoons of sunflower or sweet almond oil (or any other liquid oil). In separate containers, disperse 1 teaspoon of Yellow Mica, Magenta Mica, and Sunset Orange Mica into 1 of tablespoon lightweight liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to get rid of clumps. Optional: To ensure the titanium dioxide blends smoothly into the soap, we recommend micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Use a coffee grinder to break up any clumps of color and prevent streaks of white from showing in the final soap. We like to use a coffee grinder that has a removable stainless steel mixing area for easy cleaning.

Weigh 8 ounces of soap into three containers, and the remaining soap into a separate container. Add the following colorants to each and use a whisk to mix thoroughly.
Container A (8 oz.) - All dispersed Yellow Mica
Container B (8 oz.) - All dispersed Sunset Orange Mica
Container C (8 oz.) - All dispersed Magenta Mica
Container D (remaining soap) - All dispersed titanium dioxide

Place the 10" Silicone Loaf Mold on a kitchen towel to tilt it to one side. Starting with the pink soap, add 1/4 of the measured Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil (it's okay to eyeball it) and whisk thoroughly. Pulse with the stick blender to bring to a light/medium trace, and pour all of the pink soap into the mold.

Measure 1/4 of the measured Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil into the orange soap and whisk throughly. Check the pink soap - if it's thick enough to support the orange layer, pulse gently with the stick blender to bring to a light/medium trace, and gently pour the orange soap into the mold. Repeat this process with the yellow soap.

Check to make sure the soap is thick enough to support the sun embed - you don't want it falling through! Then, gently place it flat side down on top of the soap.

Pour the remaining Ray of Sunshine Fragrance Oil into the white soap and whisk in thoroughly. If the soap is still extremely thin, pulse quickly with the stick blender to bring to a light/medium trace.

Remove the towel under the mold, and fill the mold with white soap until it's level. Then, let the remaining soap thicken in the pitcher and add it to the top of the soap to add texture and height.

Sprtiz the soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol. If you live in a cold climate, you can place this loaf on a heating pad for 1-2 hours to gently insulate it. Allow the soap to stay in the mold for 1-2 days. Unmold and cut into bars. Allow to cure for 4-6 weeks. Enjoy!
