What is EcoGlitter?
EcoGlitter is made of cellulose, which is an organic compound found in plants. It mainly comes from cotton and wood pulp. Cellulose is used to make a variety of products like paper, cellophane, and rayon.
Along with being natural and vegan, it's also biodegradable! That means it can be broken down by bacteria or microbes and reabsorbed into the earth.
Other ingredients in EcoGlitter include water, glycerin, and dyes.
Why biodegradable glitters are important
You've likely heard of microplastics by now. They're small particles often used in personal care products like scrubs and toothpaste. These small plastics are easily washed down the drain, so they end up in our water. According to this article from Pew, microplastics made up 11% of total ocean pollution in 2016 - that's 1.3 million metric tons.
This pollution is being ingested by fish and other marine life. The pieces can harm their organs, and the toxins in the plastic can cause other health issues. These particles can also be ingested by humans.
Biodegradable alternatives can help reduce this pollution. It's important to our customers to have these options available, which is why we stopped carrying plastic glitter. We also have natural exfoliants like walnut shells, jojoba beads, and cranberry seeds.
How to use EcoGlitter
It's skin-safe cosmetic glitter, so you can use it in scrubs, bath bombs, nail polish, lotion, and melt and pour soap. You can also sprinkle it on top of cold process soap, but it will dissolve if it's added at trace. Start with about 1/4 teaspoon per pound and go from there. Here are a few projects to try.
Bubbling Berry Bath
Truffles
Pink EcoGlitter adds a fun finishing touch
to these truffles. When you add one to a hot bath, they bubble and fill the water
with skin-loving oils. They're also made with fun and fruity Bramble Berry Fragrance
Oil.
Bath Salt
Crystals
These are also fun to use in the tub!
They're super easy to make too. All you have to do is sprinkle mica and Fine Silver
Rainbow EcoGlitter onto extra coarse Epsom salt. A little polysorbate 80 helps the
color mix into the water nicely.
Moon
Child Soap Cupcakes
Remember how we mentioned
EcoGlitter looks lovely on top of cold process soap? It helps the moon and star
embeds pop in this project. Moon Child Fragrance Oil adds notes
of grapefruit, thyme, white tea, nutmeg, rose, and
honey.
